GDT Employee Spotlight: Tarun Sawhney

In this edition of the GDT Spotlight, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Shared Services Finance Leader in India, Tarun Sawhney. Tarun has been a dedicated member of the GDT family for the past three years. Keep reading to get to know Tarun and see what life at GDT looks like through his eyes.

What does your role entail?

Tarun: My role is to take care of accounting for global entities. I’m responsible for completing statutory audits, overseeing tax and legal compliance for legal entities, working with teams to stabilize and optimize Finance Shared Services operations, and contributing towards our one GDT vision.

Where did you grow up?

Tarun: I grew up in Delhi, completed my professional education, and have worked and traveled to multiple cities in India, such as Mumbai and Bangalore.

What drew you to this field, and how did you get started in your current role?

Tarun: Having a penchant for numbers, I chose to be a qualified accountant. Corporate finance was a very natural extension of my skills and interests.

I have worked in several multinational companies such as Amex, IBM, and Coforge, where I acquired experience in various facets of corporate finance, including statutory audits, tax filings, transfer pricing, deal pricing, shared services/delivery center operations, and legal compliance.

My longest career stint was with IBM, where I was involved in taking care of accounting and finance for Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern European countries. Truly, it was an enriching and impactful experience. Working in a global environment broadened my thought process and ability to develop solutions, thereby assisting our business in managing the bottom line and achieving tangible results.

Can you describe your team’s culture and dynamics here at GDT?

Tarun: We as a team have a culture of mutual trust and camaraderie among team members, respect for individual thoughts, and the ability to find solutions with reasoning. This is particularly of merit when trying to understand prior year transactions and impacts or exposures they may have. The team takes responsibility and goes above and beyond to close things and achieve results.

What are the key goals for your department this year?

Tarun: We’re looking to complete all pending audits, move to current financial year audits, and create a resilient process environment for accounting and compliance. We are also working towards creating a cohesive and productive Finance Shared Services team for GDT, where processes and operations are standardized with checks and controls.

What aspects of our organizational vision, mission, or values resonate with you?

Tarun: Mutual trust, empathy for employees, and an approachable and open culture make GDT a wonderful place to work. While we strive for greater professionalism and achieving bigger results, at the same time, a conscious effort to maintain employee focus makes GDT different and a great place to work.

Where do you like to travel ?

Tarun: My favorite places to travel are Maasai Mara in Kenya to see the great wild beast migration and upper Assam/Arunachal Pradesh (northeast state of India) to drive on one of the longest bridges in India – Bhupen Hazarika Bridge on the River Brahmaputra in Assam.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Tarun: I enjoy reading non-fiction, running 10Ks, and watching travelogues.

What advice would you give someone just starting their career in your field?

Tarun: Be diligent and patient. One must go through the learning curve; there are no shortcuts in life. One should focus on technical upskilling, which has become more essential in the present ever-evolving environment.

Thank you, Tarun, for sharing your journey and insights with us. Your dedication and expertise play a crucial role in making GDT a great place to work. To learn more about GDT’s vibrant culture and explore our career opportunities, visit Life at GDT.
