End-of-life Products Trigger Network Provider’s Security Rebirth

An award-winning network provider connecting 5.1 million people, businesses and government operations needed an upgrade. In fact, the security of their servers depended on it. Their current servers had reached end-of-life/end-of-support status, and if they delayed upgrading their system, they risked the very real possibility of a network-wide outage to all of their network devices. Even worse, they wouldn’t have been about to get any support to fix the outage. As a longtime GDT customer, they knew just who to turn to in order to prevent that from happening.

  • The customer’s existing servers had reached end-of-life status, which meant they were outdated and did not provide the support the organization needed.
  • The servers were also no longer being supported by the OEM, which meant that any outage could be devastating to their network.
  • The replacement solution needed to be implemented and integrated in a way that would be invisible to their internal customers and provide the same level of access.

The customer needed Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), an identity management system that provides visibility and security into a network. It delivers network access control and policy enforcement based on authentication, authorization, and accounting. As a Cisco Gold Partner with five Cisco Master Specializations (including both Networking and Security), GDT was the ideal partner to implement this solution. We first implemented ISE in standalone mode and then did the migration of the outdated configuration to ISE. We then added three other ISE nodes to provide high availability in a distributed deployment. After extensive testing, we moved all devices away from the old system to authenticate to ISE. ISE was implemented and integrated in a way that was invisible to their internal customers, and it provided the same level of access.

GDT’s solution enhanced the security of the customer’s network. They now have the comfort in knowing that their TACACS authentication, now seamlessly being handled by ISE, has been brought up to industry standards and that ISE is covered under Cisco TAC support. By implementing ISE for their TACACS authentications, they have also invested in a solution that can do substantially more than their previous system, should they choose to implement additional features in the future.
