GDT to Host Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center’s Annual Fundraiser

The Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center has its biggest fundraiser of the year this weekend, and it also happens to be one of the most exciting events of the year for art collectors in town. Art for Advocacy, taking place Saturday night at General Datatech, is a seated dinner and auction featuring the work of about 100 renowned local and national artists.

It’s a rare chance to snag pieces by art world darlings like Sarah Bahbah, Rae Bk, Gray Malin, and Dan Lam while supporting one of Dallas’ most crucial organizations.

In case you’re not familiar with DCAC, it coordinates the investigation, prosecution, and healing services for the most severe cases of child abuse in Dallas County. Each year, DCAC comes to the aid of more than 5,000 children who have been subject to sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, or witnessed a violent crime. In the past, Art for Advocacy has raised over $1 million to help DCAC continue its mission.

All the auction pieces were donated to the event by the artists, some of whom have been participating in Art for Advocacy since its inception in 2007. To add to the mix, new talent is tapped by a curatorial committee of local curators, gallerists, and art experts.

“Being part of the Curatorial Committee was like getting to play fantasy curator. Asking in the name of DCAC’s service to children felt like license to select a range of art from established artists represented by Conduit Gallery and Blueprint, plus local up-and-coming artists,” says Carron Batt, an associate at Conduit who sits on the committee that curates the art.

The committee included a wide array of media, styles, and price points in the auction.

This year, more emphasis was placed on street art; artists like Rae Bk, LeBA, and Septerhed donating their work. Photography is also aplenty with pieces by Sarah Bahbah, Gray Malin, and Maxine Helfman.

“A lot of artists now have taken note of DCAC and are donating work,” says Alan Simmons of Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art, a veteran on the curatorial committee. “Last year was the most successful Art for Advocacy event in the history of AFA, and I think that’s because of the quality of the art.”

However, some of the most gorgeous items from the 2018 Auction Catalogue are by local artists. Standout pieces by Arthur Peña, Ricardo Paniagua, Matthew Brinston, Favio Moreno, Keer Tanchak, Stephen Lapthisophon, and Greg Piazza are a testament to Dallas’ breadth of talent.

See the stellar lineup at the main event and art auction, taking place on Saturday; tickets are available Online starting at $500.
